DAY 43 - COUNTING DOWN TO THE 50TH

Good Morning, Class of '64
Rugged Beauty - Richard B. Tiberius - http://www.tiberiusart.com/rugged-beauty%E2%80%94chicory/

Out and About Where the Chicory Blooms

On roadsides along the way the chicory blooms:
An unkempt (or was it planned?)
 median strip blooms chicory full.
Lovely, but, too soon!

Standing tall and blue in wasted places,
Chicory embraces the warmth of June,
and slips away with autumn's chill.
And that's the thorn!
A reminder that sun filled days will end
and the length of light will lessen, now.
Till the end, the chicory looms
And reminds us with it's blue.

The Chicory was with us through our summer days and took us back to school - we probably never noticed. That "blue flower" was probably often seen, but never given a name. Chicory brewed coffee we might have known about but didn't associate with that tall "blue flower". Ancestors might have used it for home remedies, but we had grown far beyond that time.

 And making us take stock
Of the world we did or didn't rock

Deep Purple
"Deep Purple" was published in 1933 as a piano
composition, and lyrics were added in 1938.
It was number one on the US pop charts in
November 1963 and also won that year's
Grammy Award for Best Rock and Roll Record.
It remained in the Top 40 for twelve weeks.

And the stars begin to twinkle

In the mist of a memory
you wander back to me
Breathing my name with a sigh...

DAY 44 - COUNTING DOWN TO THE 50TH

Good Morning, Class of '64

TV Families from the
Fifties and Early Sixties

Part One

The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet
1952-1966
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Adventures_of_Ozzie_and_Harriet

Radio Show

1952
1960

The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet aired on ABC from October 3, 1952 through March 26, 1966. It starred the real life family of Ozzie and Harriet Nelson. The show began on radio in October of 1944, but their sons, David and Ricky, didn't join the radio cast until the fifth year, in 1949, when they were eleven (David) and eight (Ricky) years old.

In 1952 the film Here Come the Nelsons was made, and it's popularity convinced Ozzie Nelson that the future of the family was on the small screen of television. The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet premiered on ABC in 1952 and remained until 1966. In 1962, it became the first prime-time scripted series on American television to reach the 10-year milestone. It ran for a total of fourteen television seasons and holds the record as the longest running live-action American sitcom in television history.
Although it was never a top-ten hit, the series became synonymous with the 1950s ideal American family life.

 Ricky the Drummer Episode

The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet made Ricky Nelson, the Nelsons' younger son, into a music teen idol. Story lines were written featuring Ricky singing because Ozzie realized the impact it would have on the show. Episodes of the show after Rick became famous as a successful musician were among some of the show's most highly rated airings. Rick first sang in the April 10, 1957, episode, Ricky the Drummer.

The series has been continuously shown on stations in public domain prints. Most of the pre-1964 episodes of The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet television series are in the public domain in the United States, except for the musical performances of Ricky Nelson. Many episodes of the show have been released on home video, and one hundred of the episodes in the public domain have been released on DVD.

 Quotes from Ozzie and Harriet

1952
David Nelson: I promised to help a couple of friends of mine.
Ricky Nelson: What about me? I'm your brother, you know.
David Nelson: Don't get maudlin.
Ricky Nelson: Oh, yeah? I suppose you think I don't know what that means.
David Nelson: Okay. What does it mean?
Ricky Nelson: Just for that, you can look it up yourself.
David Nelson: I told you, I promised to help a couple of friends of mine. A guy can have a couple of friends in this world, can't he?
Ricky Nelson: Oh, yeah? If it wasn't for me, you'd be an only child."

 1958
Harriet Nelson: You know, it's none of my business, but don't you think taking riding lessons is a pretty expensive way to meet a girl?
Ozzie Nelson: Yeah, especially since you don't need the lessons?
Ricky Nelson
: Oh, well, we made a deal. See, I'm gonna teach her how to play the guitar, and she's gonna teach me how to ride.
Ozzie Nelson: Well, that sounds like a good idea.
Harriet Nelson: What happens, if she finds out you can ride?
David Nelson: Probably hit him over the head with the guitar."

1957

David tries to ask a beautiful girl to a dance, but discovers she only speaks Spanish]
Chuck: What happened?
David Nelson: Well, she's a real nice girl, but she doesn't speak any English. I wish I took Spanish instead of French.
Chuck: I'm taking Latin.
Wally: Don't look at me - I'm still working on English."

DAY 45 - COUNTING DOWN TO THE 50TH

 Good Morning, Class of '64
Ragtime America - Michael Greeley

A minx in khaki struts the limelit boards:
With false moustache, set smirk and ogling eyes
And straddling legs and swinging hips she tries
To swagger it like a soldier, while the chords
Of rampant ragtime jangle, clash, and clatter;
And over the brassy blare and drumming din
She strains to squirt her squeaky notes and thin
Spirtle of sniggering lascivious patter.
Then out into the jostling Strand I turn,
And down a dark lane to the quiet river,
One stream of silver under the full moon,
And think of how cold searchlights flare and burn
Over dank trenches where men crouch and shiver.
Humming, to keep their hearts up, that same tune

Rock-a-Teens - 1959

Ragtime has about the same
amount of respect as comics.
And in a way they're similar art forms.
Ragtime is highly compositional,
and the emotion in the music is built in,
whereas in jazz a lot of that emotion
comes from the way it's performed.

Ragtime
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ragtime
Ragtime is a musical genre that enjoyed its
peak popularity between 1895 and 1918.
It originated in African American music in the
late 19th century and is a distinctly American
musical style. Piano is the main instrument of
Ragtime music, but arrangements have been
written for other instruments. Jazz claimed the
public's imagination after 1917, and Ragtime fell
out of favor, but there have been numerous revivals.

My
appearance was always good and my
ability to play on the piano, especially

its vogue, made me a welcome guest.

When I'm dead twenty-five years,
people are going to begin to recognize me.

Small clear chords hung in the air like flowers.
The melodies were like bouquets.
There seemed to be no other possibilities
for life than those delineated by the music.

Ragtime - Unknown
A typical Joplin rag has a disciplined arrangement
of repeats and returns not unlike that of the march,
and a similar duple tune signature. Jazz probably
got its start, Schuller believes, when saloon pianists
who could not read music began improvising rags
they had heard.
